Guinness is good for you. So good, it's prescribed by doctors practicing in Ireland and in the UK to prevent and treat illnesses. Most Canadian doctors warn against all forms of alcohol because it can lead to major problems, but doctors working in Ireland say a little bit of the black stuff can be beneficial.

Guinness is high in iron and antioxidants. Doctors give Guinness stout to post-operative patients and blood donors to help them produce healthy blood cells. And the blood benefits don't stop there. Patients at risk for heart attacks are advised to drink a little stout to help prevent the clotting activity in their blood.

But this doesn't mean the more the better. If you take away anything from this, it should be that Guinness stout in light to moderate drinkers (one or two pints per week) will benefit the most from the healthy aspects of Guinness. If you drink stout heavily - or any other alcoholic drink for that matter - problems will arise.

Nutritional Information

Most Canadians believe that one pint of Guinness is over 2,000 calories - but that is far from the truth. A pint of Guinness stout is about 176 calories - the equivalent of a glass of skim milk. And that is roughly the same amount of calories that are in other Irish beers such as Caffrey's Draught and Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale.
People develop "Beer Bellies" when they drink to much beer, and don't eat healthily or excersize. Below are the nutritional labels to help you balance out your life style. Another general guidline is "a beer a day is ok". Healthy people can have a beer a day. But if you have a cold or the flu, it is not a good idea to consume any alcohol because it can dehydrate you and remove the electrolights and water that your body needs to heal. When in doubt, talk to your doctor or pharasist.

The Irish beers available in Canada are: Guinness Draught in a can or bottle, Guinness Stout in a bottle, Caffrey's Draught in a can, Kilkenny Irish Cream in a can, and Smithwick's Irish Ale in a bottle. These should all be available at your local liquor store. Below are the nutrition labels for the Irish beers available in Canada.
